Stripping social context and spiritual meaning

So, it seems another celebrity couple is divorcing just a couple months after a very public marriage, and, predictably, this is being trotted out as an argument in favor of gay marriage.  But the logic only holds if those opposed to gay marriage don’t object to such brief marriages and easy divorces, and that’s just not the case.  There is a very strong correlation between opposing gay marriage and decrying the American culture of easy divorce.  Focus on the Family (to cite one group much-hated by liberals) wasn’t created to oppose gay marriage.  Promise Keepers (to cite another that was despised in its heyday) was likewise about strengthening traditional marriage.  Opposition to gay marriage was only incidental to the main purpose of these and similar groups.  The reason gay marriage has become such a focus for social conservatives is because it is the last redoubt that we hold, and because liberals are determined to use homosexuality to strip Christians of their civil liberties.  Preserving some semblance of the natural, healthy, socially integrated family by at least restricting marriage to heterosexual relationships is our last bulwark.

Do any of the liberals pointing to various disgraces to heterosexual marriage want to make it harder to get divorced?  To strengthen the decayed social sanctions against adultery, fornication, and bearing children out of wedlock?  To reduce the welfare state’s usurpation of the traditional roles of family and community?  To strengthen and enforce laws against public indecency and obscenity?  Of course not.

While “Kim Kardashian’s mock marriage failed…therefore ‘gay marriage’ must be supported” is not an argument in any way in concert with rationality, it does follow a pattern that has been enormously successful for social liberalism:

portraying that which is straight as bad in order to portray that which is gay as good-by-contrast.

They are now working to apply this to marriage, trying to portray straight marriage as though it was typified by temporary legal liaisons like Kim Kardashian’s, and ‘gay marriage’ thus somehow better in comparison.

The structural model that this parallels is their decades-old comparison of straight men to gay men. Straight men have been portrayed for decades as villains by default, as coarse, insensitive, lowbrow, undisciplined, uncivilized animals…

…and that portrayal has allowed social liberals to use the media, including TV and movies, to portray gay men as sensitive, sweet, kind, charming, suave, aesthetically gifted individuals. That portrayal is not in any way based in reality, but it has been successfully painted by social liberals because so many have accepted stereotypes of straight men as knuckle-dragging neanderthals as a backdrop to contrast gay men against.

And now that approach is being applied to marriage.

You make a good point about the extensive role the media has played in de-legitimizing the traditional family and encouraging promiscuity and homosexuality as normal, healthy alternatives.
